Montsoreau : "Village de charme"

The village of Monsoreau has received 2 award labels: “Village
de charme” (Charming Village) and “Plus beau village de France" (Most
beautiful village in France). Its flea market is renowned and receives
nearly 5,000 visitors every 2nd Sunday of the month.
Its troglodyte village has windows, doors and staircases that cut into
the cliff and reveal a surprising underground world in which farmers,
fishermen and wine growers, that were either nobles or clerics, coexisted
over the years.
It is estimated that at the end of the 18th century a large part of the
population lived in these "caves"!
At the beginning of the 20th century, the mushroom growers moved into
the immense galleries dug in the 15th century.
The Loire, world heritage site
On 30 November 2000, the Loire Valley from Sully sur Loire to Chalonnes
sur Loire (Maine et Loire) - 260 km of the longest river in France - was
designated a UNESCO world heritage site. The Château de Montsoreau
is located on this section of the last "wild" river in Europe.
